Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) Overview

Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) allows mobile phone users to send and receive multimedia content that includes text, images, audio, video clips and graphics.

With MX Telecom's direct connections into various mobile networks, both MMS and WAP Push can be used to deliver multimedia content.

With WAP Push, the end user receives a WAP Push SMS message on their handset that contains a URL from which the multimedia content can be downloaded. With MX Telecom's MMS Gateway, the end user receives an MMS message on their handset.

MX Telecom has two Bulk MMS sending services; Bulk Operator MMS and Bulk Direct MMS (with Bulk Operator MMS).

Bulk Operator MMS Service

Bulk Operator MMS allows content providers to send MMS messages to end users through MX Telecom's direct connections to mobile operators' Multimedia Messaging Service Centres (MMSCs), with the multimedia content appearing as an MMS on the end user's handset.

The end user does not have to pay for downloading the message as this cost is borne by the content provider as part of the Bulk MMS charge.

The Bulk Operator MMS service can be used to send MMS messages to end users on all the main UK networks.

Bulk Direct MMS (with Bulk Operator MMS) Service

Bulk Direct MMS allows content providers to send MMS messages directly to end users, routed through the MX Telecom Virtual MMSC.

The end user receives an MMS message on their handset that in effect contains a URL pointing to MX Telecom's Virtual MMSC where the multimedia content is downloaded from. The end user bears the cost of downloading the multimedia content.

The Bulk Direct MMS service can be used to send MMS messages to end users on Vodafone, O2 and T-Mobile networks. However, Direct MMS is not currently available with Orange or 3, who block this on their networks.

In order to send MMS to these two networks, therefore, the Bulk Operator MMS Service is used - i.e. Bulk Operator MMS will be used in place of Bulk Direct MMS when sending an MMS to a handset on the Orange or 3 networks.
